A Herbie Derby is a no weld small car derby. Any welding or
reinforcing the car unless stated here will be disqualified.
1. Cars and stationwagons with 3, 4 or 6 cylinder gasoline engines only
- NO diesel engines allowed. Cars must be 107 inches or less in wheel
base. Most cars this type are Mazda, Pinto, Toyota, Sunbird's, Grand AMs,
Mustang II, Volkswagons, etc. NO American Pacer, Vovo cars or pickup
trucks allowed. Standard type compact or smaller cars only. NO 4 -Wheel
drive vehicles.
2. Suspension must remain at standard height. NO spacers, stops, blocks
or reversed spring shackles used to raise or lower the car. Torsion bars
may NOT be adjusted to raise or lower car. Shocks may NOT be welded and
NO more than 4 band spring (original size) allowed. Rear spring and rear
end may NOT be tied to frame. Rear end or differential must be of stock
type. NO wire or chains from rear end springs to body or frame. Stock
type springs only - NO truck springs.
3. Fender trimming allowed. Fenders may be cut to outer diameter of
tires. You may use 10 3/8 bolts to connect the outer fender to inner
fender but the heads of bolts must be on the outside.
4. Trunk lids must have 2 holes cut the size of a football or bigger for
inspection of trunk area. If the back seat is removed and we can clearly
see into the trunk through the rear fire wall to inspect the trunk area
then no inspection holes are needed.
5. Trunks must be empty - NO added ballasts. NO trunk pins can be
connected to the frame or thru the trunk floor. NO wire straps or chains
from trunk lid to trunk floor. If bolting the lid shut no more then six
(6) 1" bolts can be used. This also applies to stationwagon tailgates.
6. All cars must have a hood and they must be securely fastened down.
They also must have holes the size of footballs or bigger for inspection
and fire extinguisher access. Also, you may be asked to remove the hood
for inspection. Two (2) hood pins may be connected to the frame on
either side of the radiator and the hood bolts are limited to four (4)
1" bolts. Hoods may not be extended to the front bumper.
7. If using wire in windows, use no larger then #9 wires and no more
then three (3) strands in each opening. NO wire in front left door
window opening. Drivers door window opening must not have anything in it
in case the driver needs to exit thru window opening. Three (3) to four
(4) bars may be mounted from the top of the car to the dash area in the
front of the drivers side at the windshield area. This is recommended to
help stop big items from flying into the drivers area. DO NOT put
anything clear across the windshield as the driver may need to exit the
car in a hurry due to fire.
8. The radiator must remain in its original position. The radiator
support must remain in the original position and must NOT be welded or
reinforced.
9. The battery must be moved to the inner area of the car and must be
fastened securely and covered with foam, an inner tube or plastic. NO
more then two (2) regular automotive batteries or one (1) industrial
type battery are/is allowed.
10. The original gas tank must be removed unless it is in front of the
rear axle. It is recommended that a supplement tank like a boat tank or
fuel cell replace the stock gas tank. All fuel tanks must be fastened
securely and must have a maximum capacity of 5 gallons.
11. The engine must be in the original location. A chain is allowed from
the motor to the frame to help hold the motor in line.
12. Tires must be DOT approved passenger car or LT tires up too 6 ply.
NO off road tires, studded tires or lugs. Any tires with marking
ground off are illegal. NO tires inside of tires are allowed.
Inner tiubes are allowed. Nothing is allowed inside tires except air.
13. Exhaust can be altered. Mufflers are not mandatory. Exhaust must not
be routed thru the drivers compartment. Keep fuel lines away from the
exhaust.
14. Transmission should be stock type. If using an automatic
transmission the cooler lines may be rerouted from the radiator and an
auxiliary transmission cooler is allowed.
15. Bumpers may be welded to the bumper brackets and braces. The bumper
brackets and braces in turn may be welded to the car frame (do no
weld the bumper directly to the car frame). Bumper ends may be cut
to the width of the car. Cars having the stock bumper replaced can only
be replaced with a stock compact or sub-compact car bumper only. You may
wire or chain bumpers to help them stay on. You may have a total of two
(2) chains or three (3) strands of wire from the front of the hood and
the rear trunk area to the bumpers. NO larger then #9 wire or
3/8" size chains NO log chains.
16. Interior support consists of one (1) brace between door posts. An X
brace behind the seat is recommended. You may also have a bar across the
dash area. DO NOT use bigger then 3" material and 3/8" wall.
NO bars attached to rear frame.
17. Drivers door seams can be welded solid. Drivers door must have some
kind of support, such as a piece of pipe welded to the outside of the
door. This reinforcement may extend as far as 4 inches beyond the seams
of the drivers door. Make the drivers door as safe as you can.
